Top chef Marcus Wareing is known to be a perfectionist in the kitchen but he appears to pay less attention to his grammar. in the run-up to Christmas, he posted an error-strewn tweet saying: “If their is any young chefs who want’s to know what training looks like at top level take a look at tonight’s MasterChefUK.”
As grammar fans and, indeed, children everywhere will know, his tweet should have correctly read, “If there are any young chefs who want to know what training looks like at top level, take a look at tonight’s @MasterChefUK.”
He was subsequently castigated by the self-styled @GrammarPolice and eloquently replied with what The Times described as “a rude hand gesture”. He later added, “I went to work not school…!!!” (which after 11 years of primary and secondary education is hardly an excuse). Wareing, 47, went to Stanley High School in Southport, Merseyside and took a three-year catering course at Southport College before going to work for Gordon Ramsay.
In one single 140 character tweet, Marcus impressively managed to commit no fewer than three cardinal sins: confusing their with there, using ‘are’ for a single noun and inserting unnecessary apostrophes.
As a successful, Michelin-starred chef at three acclaimed restaurants, there can be no doubt Marcus Wareing is a superb cook – let’s just hope he leaves someone else to create his restaurants’ menus!
